Ep 201: Multiple Traps Countdown to Destruction

Ino explains to Tsunade that the exploding notes were diversions. Shikamaru looks up at the clouds thinking and summarizing the case as Choji eats his chips. Shika looks over at the Hokage monument and realizes something.

Gennou points out all the exploding tags to Naruto and explains the back part of Konoha is protected by very hard rock (the Hokage monument). There are fine veins that when hit will crumble. He set up the tags to make the mountain collapse.

Shikamaru thinks of the same plan where the rock slide will destroy the village. Shika and Choji run to warn Tsunade while Lee reports that the troops have returned. Hinata tells them about Naruto.

Naruto tries to talk sense into Gennou but he says if Naruto tries to leave, the trap will go off. The bird gives Gennou the signal that the troops have returned and it's time to activate the explosion. Naruto performs kage bunshin but Gennou takes them out with Oridou (copper coins). Gennou tells Naruto he can't undo his trap but Naruto says his friends will help. Gennou points out that at Ichiraku all Naruto did was complain about his friends. Gennou throws kunai to activate the explosions but Kiba breaks in with Gatsuuga deflecting all the kunai. Kiba explains that Hinata thought it was strange for Naruto to disappear so she searched for him. Shikamaru deduced the final trap would be at the mountain. Shino's bugs trap Gennou but it was a replacement and explodes. Gennou is on top of the mountain about to set off his trap when Shikamaru catches him with his shadow neck bind technique. Choji is about to restrain Gennou but a smokescreen appears when he's touched. The rest of the team appears and say the trap has been dismantled.

But Gennou is not done yet. He shoots something into the air to distract the team and appears with another exploding tag to set off an explosion and the mountain cracks. Sakura recognizes it as an illusion and dispels it. Gennou then summons his bird and is about to escape but Ino uses her mind transfer technique. She leaves his body quickly because he is in great pain. Lee blocks his way and fights Gennou amid a smokescreen. Finally Gennou collapses, but he's still not done.

The bird heads toward the mountain with an exploding note on its foot. Gennou planted explosive notes along the crack in the Third Hokage to cause an avalanche. Tenten summons arrows but misses. Naruto leaps to the Third's face and tries to hit the bird with rasengan but he falls and is caught by Choji. Hinata joins Naruto to read the bird's movement, but Naruto misses. Sakura throws a large rock at the bird and missies. Naruto is then finally able to hit it with rasengan.

Sakura tries to help Gennou but notes that his insides are all messed up. Gennou lies dying but says it was fun. The photo he clutches falls to the ground. Shikamaru reads "The worth of my treasure hunt: the satisfaction on the face of my son."

Shino notes there have been no victims during this crisis. Tsunade explains to Shikamaru that the boy was Gennou's son who was a shinobi who died in Konoha's attack on Dragonfly Village and wanted revenge. But Shika says that was his original plan. The explosive device in the Academy would not go off and the devices in the monument would have just caused a crack. Gennou had no real intention of crushig Konoha. It was a treasure hunt. He may have came to Konoha for revenge but after meeting Naruto, who looked like his son, he changed his mind. He didn't have much time left so he made it into an enjoyable game.

The team enjoy their ramen. Naruto thinks about Konoha's enemies like Orochimaru and how they should be prepared to protect Konoha by combining all their strength.

Review: Ending was weak but overall probably the best of the fillers.
