Vol 16

Ch 136: The Final Blow (ep 79)

Tanuki is translated as badger here rather than raccoon. It is actually a different animal called a raccoon dog: Tanuki

Shukaku eyes are different when fully awake (top) vs when Gaara is still in control (bottom).

Gaara says "Don't lick me" instead of "That won't help for long" when Naruto is wrapped by Gamabunta's tongue to save Naruto from the sand.

When Gamabunta disappears, he leaves his dagger behind which is used as a dividing line between Naruto and Gaara to nice effect. Anime does this, too, but not as clear that the dagger is the dividing line.

Manga doesn't show Gai and Kakashi fighting, just cuts to the scene when most fighting is done and the leaf jounins look down at the stadium floor.

Lead Anbu guy comments that it's "not possible for a shinobi fight to last for the greater part of an hour" (probably about 45 minutes).

Ends with Hokage saying "your ambitions end here."

Ch 137: The Shinobi of the Leaf.!! (ep 79)

The possible Kiba relatives are not running around but are facing 3 intruders.

No scenes with Konohamaru and the evacuated villagers.

Ends with Hokage finally dying after sealing Orochimaru's arms.

Ch 138: Crumbling Leaf, End!! (ep 80)

Kakashi is seriously pissed at Kabuto, anime emphasizes it by the shaking of his hand.

End: Jiraiya is present with the rest of the jounin around Hokages's body, not as apparent (badly drawn) in the anime.

Ch 139: That Person's Name is .!! (ep 80, nice color pic of Kakashi and team)

Itachi and Kisame appears at the beginning of the chapter, but they appear at the end of the anime episode.

The funeral for the Hokage is held 2 days afer the battle. No other shinobis are depicted with his picture.

Naruto is not shown getting dressed for the funeral or meeting up with Sasuke and Sakura. Everyone is just at the funeral.

Shinobi memorial is a plain rectangular solid, not weird angular shape like anime.

Flag appears and disappears. Iruka's parents appear to be among the first to die. Maybe memorial was erected around that time.

See Kakashi analysis for translation differences in scene at the shinobi memorial with the Anbu girl.

Jiraiya's flashback to the bells test is cut short in the anime and appears in ep 83.

The translation of Iruka, Naruto, and Kakashi's discourse on death is somewhat different than the anime and seems to make less sense (will update when official English version comes out).

Cenotaph = tomb or monument erected in honor of a person whose body is elsewhere

Ends will Naruto joining his team after the funeral.

Ch 140: Proximity.!! (ep 81)

No scene with Itachi putting the guard to sleep or Sasuke, Naruto training or Sasuke receiving Kakashi's bird message.

No scene between Konohamaru and Naruto

Order is different, manga starts with Jiraiya spying and advisors Homaru (Oichan = old man?) and Koharu-Sensei, then cuts to Kabuto and Orochimaru, then to Sand finding Kazekage's body

Kakashi is not reading a book while waiting by the restaurant. He says to Asuma and Kurenai "Hey you two.you guys look good together.are you guys on a date?"

When Asuma asks Kakashi what he is doing there, if he is there to pick up some sweets, Kakashi says "Not really, sometimes I drop by to buy some stuff.right now I'm meeting up with someone.I'm waiting for Sasuke." No mention of offerings or Obito like in the anime.

Sasuke says "I was planning on buying some sweets. It's useless now." Then Kakashi (?) says "Yeah, it is." In anime, Sasuke doesn't like sweets or fermented soybean.

Note: Both in anime and manga it is not clear why Kakashi wanted to see Sasuke. This whole scene doesn't make a whole lot of sense since Kakashi did not know that it was Itachi. Will update when official English version comes out.

Ends with Kurenai and Asuma confronting the two strangers.

Ch 141: Itachi Uchiha!! (ep 81)

No scenes with Naruto looking for his coupon.

Ends with Kakashi confronting Itachi.

Ch 142: Kakashi vs. Itachi (ep 82)

Kakashi says ".I see now the mist's "seven way shinobi katana jutsu" is in this guy's large katana, the Samahada, is it not?" Not sure what this means, seems to imply that the sword has special powers, in the anime Kakashi says Kisame is one of the seven shinobi gatana of the Mist.

Kakashi's torture scene is shorter and less painful looking than the anime.

Ends with Itachi saying he is after the fourth hokage's legacy.

Ch 143: The Fourth Daime's Isan (ep 82-83)

In Kakashi's flashback conversation with Jiraiya, Jiraiya says he plans to take Naruto to the shinobi training center (he doesn't mention the training center until a later ep in the anime).

Jiraiya says to Naruto about the trip: ".it's a paid-for work trip. We're supposed to find a certain girl. It's also a special trip. We'll stop by the red light district in Hima. You will learn much more than what Kakashi sensai has taught you. "

Ends with Naruto with his over-packed bag ready to leave with Jiraiya.

Ch 144: The Pursuers (ep 83)

No scene of Naruto doing air or fire walk and no dog poop.

Doesn't say they're going to Otafuku City.

Sakura does not bring ohagi to Ino or Sasuke or Naruto. In her flashback, Kakashi doesn't say anything while Naruto is trying to do the chidori.

No scene with Naruto playing with bells.

Jiraiya's flashback to the bells test from ch 139 appears in ep 83.

Ramen restaurant owner says ".He was going to leave town for a bit, take the cattle road down to the hotel town or something." (note "cattle road")

Anime filler of Sasuke running around to different hotels. In manga just show the last one where he finds a young blond kid and old man.

No scene of Naruto practicing chakra with his clones.

Ends with Naruto opening the door to find Sasuke.
